Shopify Catalog media filter: video and model_3d (Sept 2026)

Shopify's Catalog API can now filter by media type: image, video or model_3d. A product only matches video if it has one, so render a product clip.

Shopify's September 15, 2026 changelog says the Catalog API now returns video and 3D model media on products and supports filtering search by media type with catalog.filters.media. Supported types are image, video and model_3d. A product without a video will not match a video filter, so the practical step is having a product clip to attach.

Shopify facts are from the changelog entry; Sume facts from the Timeline 1.0 and video frames docs, read 2026-10-01.

What changed in the Catalog API?

The entry lists these points.

Why does a product need a video at all?

Because the filter matches media that exists. A video filter returns products that carry a video, so products with only images drop out. Sume does not publish to Shopify's catalog; it can make the clip file. See adding a video to a Shopify product page for the page side.

What can Sume produce for the video slot?

Timeline 1.0 composes clips and stills into one video. Per the docs, output length is "1–1800 s", output.width and height are "Even integers 256–2160", and output.fps takes 24, 25, 30 or 60, with "Omit to match the sources." Pick even dimensions, for example 1080x1080 or 1080x1920, and a short length.

Shopify's changelog excerpt gives no video size, length or format limits, so check Shopify's media documentation for what a product accepts before you upload.

How do I check the clip before upload?

Use the video frames endpoint to pull stills. The docs say format is jpeg by default or png ("lossless inspection"), with 1–24 explicit at[] times, each inside the clip duration. Look at the first frame and the product shots, then upload. Related: extract video frames API.
