WhatsApp audio message format: AAC, MP3, OGG Opus mono, 16 MB
WhatsApp accepts AAC, AMR, MP3, M4A and OGG (Opus, mono) up to 16 MB. Sume's audio detach returns mp3 or wav, so mp3 fits; ogg needs another tool.

WhatsApp Cloud API audio accepts AAC, AMR, MP3, M4A and OGG, each up to 16 MB, and OGG must use Opus codecs and mono input. Sume's audio detach returns mp3 (128 kbps) or wav, so MP3 is the type that matches; OGG Opus is not in the Sume docs read and needs another tool.
Limits are from Meta's media reference; output formats from Sume's Audio detach docs, read 2026-10-01.
Which audio types does WhatsApp list?
| Type | WhatsApp MIME / note | Sume output |
|---|---|---|
| AAC | audio/aac, 16 MB | Not documented as a standalone format |
| AMR | audio/amr, 16 MB | Not documented |
| MP3 | audio/mpeg, 16 MB | Yes: format: "mp3" on audio detach |
| M4A | audio/mp4, 16 MB | Not documented |
| OGG | audio/ogg, Opus only, mono only, 16 MB | Not documented |
How do I get MP3 from a video?
Call POST /v1/audio-detach with a media.sume.com video_url, an Idempotency-Key, and format: "mp3". Optional channels: "mono" and sample_rate are documented too. The default format is wav, which is PCM and large, so ask for mp3 to stay near the 16 MB cap. Music generation also returns audio typically served as audio/mpeg.
What about OGG Opus voice notes?
Meta says base audio/ogg is not supported, only Opus codecs, and only mono input. The Sume timeline-audio docs describe wav as the default output and they name no ogg or opus encoder, so convert elsewhere (for example with ffmpeg) if you need a voice-note style file. channels: "mono" on detach covers the mono half only.
What should I check before uploading?
Confirm size, MIME type and mono for OGG. For channel and sample-rate options see audio detach channels and sample rate.
