Udemy requires at least 30 minutes of video to publish a course, HD video of at least 720p, shot horizontally in 16:9. Audio-only or static-slide content counts as low quality. This is from Udemy Support, read 2026-10-01. The page does not state a file size or MP4 rule.

What are Udemy's video standards?

Udemy video standards, from Udemy Support, read 2026-10-01.

Can Sume render a 720p, 16:9 lesson?

Yes. 1280x720 and 1920x1080 are both even and inside the 256 to 2160 range, and audio.duration_seconds runs 1 to 1800, so one render can be a full 30-minute lesson. The default output is vertical, so set output.width and output.height yourself. Timeline 1.0 (POST /v1/timeline-1.0/render) takes output.width and output.height as even integers from 256 to 2160 and output.fps of 24, 25, 30 or 60, or omits fps to match the sources. It needs an Idempotency-Key, accepts only media.sume.com sources, and returns one MP4 at $0.10 per output minute, rounded up. The unbilled POST /v1/timeline-1.0/plan previews the cost first.

curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/timeline-1.0/render \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Idempotency-Key: udemy-lesson-001" \
  -d '{
    "audio": { "mode": "silence", "duration_seconds": 900 },
    "output": { "width": 1280, "height": 720, "fps": 30 },
    "video": [
      { "source_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/shot.mp4",
        "start": 0, "duration": 900, "fit": "cover" }
    ]
  }'

Will slides plus a voiceover count?

Udemy lists static-slide content as low quality. A Timeline can use stills, but the docs say stills are static holds. Use moving footage or screen capture where you can, and read Udemy's page for what it accepts.

Do captions help?

The part of Udemy's page I read states no caption requirement. Video captions is optional, $0.20 per video up to 60 seconds, so for a long lesson it applies per clip, not per course.

How do I confirm the resolution?

Probe the finished file with Video inspect 1.0. With frames: false it is a probe only, it is unbilled, and it reports width, height, container, fps and duration_seconds. It does not report file size, codec or bitrate, so check those with a local tool before you upload.
