Twitch 2K clips: trim a 1440p clip without setting output
Video trim's output width and height are limited to 256-2160, so a 2560-wide 1440p clip cannot be conformed. Omit output and the source size is kept.

Trim a 1440p Twitch clip with POST /v1/video-trim and leave output out. When output is set, width and height must be between 256 and 2160, and a 1440p frame is 2560 wide, so conforming to its own size is refused. Omitting output makes the trim inherit the source.
The 2K details are from Twitch's 2026-06-17 post and the limits from Video trim, read 2026-09-30. The 2560x1440 frame size is the standard meaning of 1440p, not a number in either source.
What did Twitch add for 2K?
The post says Partners and Affiliates can stream at 2K (1440p), with bitrates up to 9 Mbps for 1440p, using HEVC. It adds that higher quality streams unlock 2K Clips and VODs.
What does video-trim do with the size?
| Setting | Rule |
|---|---|
output omitted | Inherits the source |
output.width / output.height | 256 to 2160 |
output.fps | 24, 25, 30 or 60 |
output with precision: "keyframe" | Refused (video_trim_output_requires_exact) |
precision: "exact" (default) | Frame-accurate re-encode, libx264, yuv420p |
What does a minimal 1440p trim look like?
Import the clip first, since trim only reads media.sume.com files, then send a range. This takes seconds 2 to 10 and sets no output.
curl -X POST https://api.sume.com/v1/video-trim \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Idempotency-Key: trim-2k-001" \
-d '{
"video_url": "https://media.sume.com/artifacts/artf_demo/clip.mp4",
"start": 2,
"end": 10
}'Is the result still HEVC?
Not with the default. The docs say exact re-encodes to libx264 with yuv420p; keyframe is a stream copy whose cut may start a GOP early. The docs do not list a source resolution cap, only duration caps, and this post does not claim how a 2K source behaves beyond what the page states. For codec details see trim output codec.
