Shopify product image size: 2048 × 2048 and the limits

Shopify says square product images usually display best at 2048 × 2048 px; uploads go up to 5000 × 5000 px and under 20 MB. How to make one at that size.

The Shopify product image size to use is 2048 × 2048 pixels: Shopify says that size usually displays best for square product images. Uploads can be any size up to 5000 × 5000 px (25 megapixels) and must be smaller than 20 MB. Shopify ranks PNG first for most product images, followed by JPEG.

Shopify's rules are quoted from its Help Center page Product media types. Sume facts come from the Image API docs and the Sume API reference. All were read on 2026-09-29.

What are Shopify's product image requirements?

Shopify's Imagery service picks the best format each customer's browser supports, and Shopify creates smaller versions of each image for different parts of your theme, so upload one large file:

What aspect ratio should Shopify product images be?

Shopify doesn't require square images. It says product images shown side by side on collection pages come out at different sizes unless your featured, or main, images all use the same aspect ratio. Pick one shape, square being the one Shopify gives a size for, and use it for every product's main image.

Shopify's developer docs list a stricter cap of 4472 × 4472 px (20 MP) with a recommended 2048 × 2048; both pages are compared in Turn Shopify product photos into product videos. 2048 × 2048 fits under either cap.

How do I make a 2048 × 2048 product image with AI?

ChatGPT Image 2.5 (openai/gpt-image-2.5) on Sume takes an exact custom image_size: both edges multiples of 16, the longest at most 3840, and 655,360 to 8,294,400 pixels. 2048 × 2048 is 4,194,304 pixels, so it is a valid request. To restyle your real product photo rather than invent one, put it at a public HTTPS URL in input_references; image_size wins over aspect_ratio, so the result stays square.

  • output_format takes png or jpeg, the two types Shopify prefers.
  • Results come back as signed, Sume-hosted URLs in data[].url; download the file and add it to the product in Shopify.
  • Each image is billed; failed or cancelled generations are not.
curl -X POST "https://api.sume.com/v1/images" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SUME_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "openai/gpt-image-2.5",
    "prompt": "The same mug on a plain light gray background, soft even studio light, whole product in frame",
    "image_size": { "width": 2048, "height": 2048 },
    "input_references": [
      { "type": "image_url", "image_url": { "url": "https://example.com/mug.jpg" } }
    ],
    "output_format": "png"
  }'

What if my product photo is smaller than 2048 pixels?

Upscale it instead of regenerating it. Image Upscale 1.0 takes a public HTTPS image_url and an upscale_factor from 1 to 4 (default 2), and costs $0.20 per image plus a 5.5% agent fee by default; for a square photo, divide 2048 by its edge to get the factor. The steps are in How to upscale an image to an exact size. The same approach for another marketplace is in Etsy listing photo size.
