Meta ads MCP server in Claude Code: the add command

Meta's docs give this command for Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http --client-id <META_APP_ID> meta-ads https://mcp.facebook.com/ads. It registers Meta's remote ads MCP server under the name meta-ads, using the ID of a Meta developer app you own as the OAuth client ID.

The command comes from Meta's Get started page and the tool list from its overview, both read 2026-09-29. Sume has no connector for Meta ads: the Sume half of this post is Sume's own hosted MCP server, added next to Meta's, and its facts come from the MCP quickstart.

What do I need before I run the command?

Meta's page says owning a Meta app is not a prerequisite for using the ads MCP server, and points to a separate help article for access without an app. The --client-id form above is the path for your own app. For that path Meta's steps are: create or reuse an app at developers.facebook.com/apps and add the **Create & manage ads with ads MCP server** use case. Then your MCP client sends you through a Facebook Login for Business dialog.

Meta's page also gives a second way in, a user access token sent as Authorization: Bearer <ACCESS_TOKEN>, for programmatic setups. Meta lists seven permissions for that token on the same page: ads_mcp_management, ads_read, ads_management, catalog_management, business_management, pages_show_list and instagram_basic.

What can Claude Code do once it is connected?

Meta groups the server's tools into seven categories. Its ad creation page adds that write tools create campaigns, ad sets and ads in a paused state and that your AI client asks for confirmation before activation.

How do I add Sume's MCP server to the same session?

Sume's quickstart uses the same claude mcp add shape with its production endpoint, then a login step:

Can Claude Code generate the video with Sume?

Yes, with one setting to know about. Sume's hosted OAuth grants read-only access (mcp:read) by default, and paid tools such as generate_video return insufficient_scope until you turn Write on at consent, or use an API-key session. Paid calls also need an idempotency_key, and dry_run and max_spend_usd are optional cost gates.

What does Meta's server not do in this flow?

Meta's ad creation page lists ads_create_creative as creating a single-image link ad creative and ads_get_ad_videos as listing videos already uploaded to an ad account.
