Instagram Edits in/out effects vs Sume timeline transitions

Edits adds 15 in and out effects on iOS. A Sume timeline compiles six transition types, capped at 1 second and 50% of the shorter neighbour.

Instagram's Edits app added 15 in and out effects, such as Glitch Out, Particles In and Displace, on iOS. A Sume timeline is narrower: each slot after the first can carry one of six transition types, fade, wipeleft, wiperight, slideup, slidedown or dissolve, with a duration of at most 1 second.

Edits facts are from the Instagram for Creators post, read 2026-10-01; Sume facts are from the Timeline 1.0 docs. Sume's timeline does not have glitch or particle effects.

What does Edits offer?

The post describes 15 in and out effects that add motion to clips, found by tapping a clip on the timeline, then Effects, then the In and Out tab. It names Glitch Out, Particles In and Displace and says they are currently available on iOS.

What transitions does a Sume timeline support?

The transition field sits on video[].transition and applies on slots after the first; video[0].start must be 0. The docs set three limits: duration at most 1 s, at most 50% of the shorter neighbouring slot, and at least one output frame.

Transition rules from the Sume Timeline docs, read 2026-10-01: https://docs.sume.com/models/timeline

Typesfade, wipeleft, wiperight, slideup, slidedown, dissolve

How do I add one in a request?

Add a transition object to the second and later video[] entries, with type and duration. For a plain cut, omit it. A sketch of the second slot: { "source_url": "https://media.sume.com/...", "start": 4, "duration": 4, "transition": { "type": "dissolve", "duration": 0.5 } }. When should I pick which?

Choose Edits when you want animated in and out looks on a phone. Choose a Sume timeline when you need to assemble many clips by API and a fade, wipe, slide or dissolve is enough. Anything past that, such as particles, has to be made before the clip reaches the timeline.
